HOW TO TRAIN FOR COMPETITIONS

HOW TO TRAIN FOR COMPETITION

SERIES OF BLOGS AS PART OF - SUCCESS IN SHOOTING

Do it right, every session.

  • Have an objective Stick to objective

  • Perfection is a result of long years of practice, so start.

  • Make notes - notes won’t help unless you have a larger plan

  • See patterns in mistakes - too many cancellations / thoughts / loose grip / long holds

  • Talk to coach not to fellow shooters

  • Solve problems, don’t repeat same one for more than 3 sessions

  • What cannot be solved, is worth being ignored

TIP

Don’t tamper with basics

No Thoughts Zone

  • Means focus on your actions.

  • Thoughts create an overlaying image on sight picture leading to something known as Inattentional Blindness (Whole chapter in the upcoming blogs)

  • Others performance is not a measure of your success or failure.

TIP

Learn pattern of your shot cycle and don’t change it, will help you in focusing.

Analyse don’t Criticise

  • Criticism creates negative emotions, analysis helps maintain balance. - example exams / results.

  • Analyse every session. Helps in identifying patters.

  • Criticism creates fear of failure when you are in a match.

  • Fear of failure leads to reduced confidence affecting daily training and lack of motivation.

TIP

Talk to coach, make them see your problems, don’t just tell them and trust your coach, if you fail, they fail too.

Body / Physical Reaction

  • Showing disgust to bad shots or excitement It initiates fear

  • Breaks process pattern Attracts unnecessary attention

  • Prompts change of plans

TIP

Keep getting back to process no matter how many times you fail

WHAT ever can go wrong, WILL go wrong

  • Weapon, Other Equipment, Range Equipment, Range Officer, Other Shooters, AC, Lights, Vehicle to reach, Weather, Coach or No Coach and You also can go wrong.

  • Be prepared - Not Scared

  • Train yourself to handle all eventualities.

TIP

CHILL ! YOU CAN'T DO ANYTHING ABOUT IT

Self Management

  • Learn what will you do it for? What makes you think in a certain way.

  • Avoid exchange of information before or after match for an hour.

  • Manage time - you don’t play with time, time plays with you. No one wins against time Expect failures / drop in form Linear growth will never happen

TIP

Awareness is beginning of the correction or change.

Hope this blog gives you a lot of insights into how to make things happen. Let me here about your thoughts, as shooters what are the things that work for you and what are those that don't. Please write to me for any guidance or queries.
